WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE FOUND A DOG OR CAT

If circumstances allow, calmly get the dog. It is best if you sit on the ground and let the dog come to you. If the dog has a tag and or collar with information call and text the number that you have found the dog. You can also encourage an animal to come to you by providing food or water in a bowl.

If there is no collar with tags, take the found animal to a local vet or Petsmart to have it scanned for a microchip. If there is a microchip they will either give you the chip number and the maker of the chip or they will call the maker themselves to check for registration. In the case where they give you the information you will want to call the chip company and notify them you found an animal and what the chip number is, they will try to contact the owners if it is registered.

If there is no other option reach out to Pawprints of Hope Rescue ONLY if all the steps above have been completed. All of the local shelters and rescues are completely full and busting at the seams.

Filling out this form does not guarantee we are able to assist. Generally, if you are willing to foster the animal UNTIL ADOPTION and help financially support its vetting, we can list and promote through our network to get the animal adopted to a good home.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE YOU SURRENDER

  • If you are considering surrendering your animal, we recommend trying the following first.

  • Consult with a trainer.

  • If possible remove any triggers or issues the animal is having within their current environment.

  • Obtain resources to assist: there are food banks to support feeding your pet and low-cost vetting and vaccinations through organizations like TCAP.

Feeding your pet

  • If you are needing help with providing food for your pet, check out Don’t Forget to Feed Me or google "free pet food near me" to locate local pantries that can help.  They are a local non profit who help supply food to those in need.
